Case Study: The Farm

If you follow me on Instagram, you may have seen me post renderings of The Farm. It’s an event space across twenty-two acres that I’ve been hired to design in Brandywine Maryland. Brandywine is an interesting rural spot within the outer suburbs of D.C.. Even though it’s got a tiny population, it’s also got several properties listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The young, Black woman investor who hired me to help her improve The Farm plans to market it as an event space for weddings or retreats. This farm is really interesting to me because its sustainable and as much as I could, I wanted to keep the integrity of the original dwellings and re-purpose what was already there in the design.

I was hired for two reasons. First, to consult on all of the building exteriors, including two barns. Next, I’ve re-imagined eight cottages and the main house. I had a more contemporary take on the buildings and interiors using bold colors and wallpaper.

They’ll also host a weekly farmer’s market and work with kids on part of the land that’s been allocated to teach kids about farming. Plus, if you live in the community but don’t have space to grow, you can do it there. So I wanted this space to feel youthful and fresh.

I'll have more on this project as it develops but wanted to give you a sneak peak.
